Imagine that you have been in France for a number of weeks and are doing your best to pick up the language. You’re a musician so it’s not difficult to mimic the accent. The vocabulary, however, is something else entirely.
After a while you go to a Spanish festival in Pamplona. You spend the days looking around and the nights dancing. You haven’t got anywhere to sleep but who cares. You’re young. Occasional quick naps under shady trees are more than enough to keep you going.
A week later, the brother of the friend you are staying with picks you up to take you back to Poitiers. He’s no stranger. You’ve started a bit of a relationship with him and he’s fallen with love with your voice, your free spiritedness and your long blond hair.
But you’re tired. The excitement of the festival has gone and all you want to do is to sleep.
Over the weeks, you’ve become adept at reading body language in your attempts to learn the spoken language so, when he asks you a question, you realise that he wants you to say yes. Blearily, you agree.
Later you discover that he has asked you to marry him. You discover this when he announces the forthcoming marriage to his horrified family.
What on earth are you going to do now?
