It’s all too easy to feel that life is rushing past like an uncontrolled river, often leaving us panting and exhausted.

Lives lived in a torrent can leave us stuck in the past and worrying about the future, unable to grab the present and unwrap it like the gift it is. It feels as though we are stuck in shadow and cannot see the light.

Writing a Gratitude Journal can help us slow down and return to where we need to be so that we can calm down and live our lives more mindfully.
The age-old process of journaling helps us to withdraw from the external world of activity into the internal world of reflection. By recording personal experiences, reflections, thoughts and feelings, a door is opened to having a more meaningful relationship with ourselves so that we can become our own best friend.
While we spend enormous effort trying to navigate our way through complex relationships with others, journaling can reveal what we truly think about ourselves. Where we try to treat others with be kindness, love and caring, we begin to see that we view ourselves with relentless self-criticism, judgement and blame, keeping ourselves in shadow and small in the crazy belief that this will keep others happy.
Journaling gives us a method of learning kindness towards ourselves.
This kindness can be fostered by creating a special place for journaling in our homes. A beautiful table which, perhaps we set up as a sacred space with flowers, crystals, candles and a few meaningful objects.

Writing in a beautiful journal – one that feels gorgeous to touch and that gives sensual pleasure to write in – is also helpful.

Learning to approach ourselves with kindness, care and compassion through journaling, can be a beautiful experience. When we sit quietly and turn within, we allow the magic that we all have inside ourselves to reveal itself, bringing us to stillness and silence and giving us the peace of mind that can transform us from shadow into shining light.
