When we are fortunate enough to have a house, we spend an enormous amount of time, money and energy caring for it, turning it into a home, keeping it clean and tidy, and stocking it with food and the necessities for life.
Our internal lives are no different. We live inside our experience and it’s up to us to create the environment that we want. New Year’s Resolutions are a way of asking ourselves if there is anything we need to do to change that environment. Does our way of living need a good clean? Is it comfortable to live inside? Is it beautiful or has it become a little jaded and complicated?

A good place to start is with self-discipline. Imagine a house without rules. Anyone would be able to stay for as long as they wanted to. Without rules, dirty dishes would be left in a heap. Cupboards would be emptied. Beds left unmade. Pretty soon, the house would lose its ability to be welcoming and functional and descend into chaos. In fact, no longer a home at all.
One of the most important self-disciplines we can embrace is being kind to ourselves. When we dare to treat ourselves kindly and replace negative self-chatter with positive self-encouragement, our internal environment has a wonderful spring clean.
As it only takes 21 days for a habit to be formed, by three quarters of the way through January you could be on the road to truly loving yourself and celebrating who you are rather than regretting who you are not.

The best way to go about making New Year’s Resolutions is to make them fun. So play with them. Laugh and experiment within your boundaries. Then sit back, put in the self-discipline, smile and create your chosen magic.
