September brings the wheel of nature to its most perfect moment of balance. As we reach the Autumn Equinox, occurring between 20th and 23rd September in the Northern Hemisphere, nature begins its gentle retreat inward. Days grow shorter, nights draw their dark embrace closer, and the sap returns to the roots as leaves transform into brilliant tapestries of orange, red, and gold.

The Sacred Balance. This is the moment when day and night stand in perfect equilibrium, a threshold between the active yang energy of summer and the receptive yin wisdom of approaching winter. It’s time to gather in the last precious gifts of harvest, both outer and inner.
Ancient Names, Timeless Wisdom. Alban Elfed is the Druid name for this sacred time, meaning “the Light of the Water.” This beautiful phrase captures the essence of autumn’s illumination, softer than summer’s blaze, yet profound as moonlight on still water. The light begins its journey toward the otherworld, and we are invited to glimpse that mystical gateway in each sunset.
Michaelmas, the Christian festival celebrated on 29th September , gracefully replaced many ancient pagan observances. Named for the Archangel Michael, this feast honours the celestial warrior who brings light to darkness, a fitting parallel to our seasonal journey from abundance into the contemplative months ahead.
Living Traditions. Ancient customs still pulse with life in our modern world. The Abbotts Bromley Horn Dance in Staffordshire offers a fascinating glimpse into pre-Christian Britain. Though it takes place in early September rather than at the equinox itself, this remarkable tradition features six dancers carrying reindeer antlers preserved since the 11th century, accompanied by a hobby horse, Maid Marian, and other archetypal figures.
The dancers perform their ritualised choreography throughout the village and surrounding countryside, weaving an ancient spell that asks for the forest spirits’ blessings. This living piece of fertility magic reminds us that our ancestors understood the sacred relationship between human community and the natural world.
The Season of the Soul. As we enter our personal autumn years, whatever our chronological age, the equinox teaches us profound lessons about slowing down and turning inward. No longer can we take life’s abundance for granted. The time of rushing through tasks is ending; now we must learn to appreciate everything for the richness it offers.
Just as nature prepares to draw inward for winter’s rest, we too are called to retreat into a calmer, more reflective state of being. This isn’t withdrawal from life but a deepening into wisdom, the learning to become human beings as well as human doings.

Sacred Questions for Reflection. As you stand at this threshold between seasons, gently ask yourself:
Energy and Peace:
- What am I giving my energy to?
- Am I caught in stress, worry, and anxiety, or can I return to greater peace and balance?
Relationships and Rest:
- Do my relationships nourish me or leave me feeling depleted?
- Am I allowing myself enough rest and restoration?
Authenticity and Truth:
- Am I being true to myself and my deepest values?
- What masks can I set aside as I move into winter’s honesty?
The Gateway Opens. At this time of sacred pause, step back from summer’s beautiful distractions. Let the Autumn Equinox take you gently by the hand and guide you into what poet John O’Donohue called “the Season of the Soul.”
Gather in your remaining harvest. This is the wisdom you’ve gained, the love you’ve shared and the growth you’ve achieved. Feel profound gratitude for all you have accomplished in this cycle. Then, with the natural grace of falling leaves, let go of what you no longer need or want.
Breathe. Breathe more reflectively as inner and outer worlds return to perfect balance. In this moment of equilibrium, you stand at the threshold between what was and what is becoming. The light grows softer but no less sacred. The days grow shorter but more precious.
Autumn’s Gift is the wisdom to know that every ending is also a beginning, every letting go is also a gathering in, every descent into darkness is also a journey toward deeper light.
