When the Light Disappears
Once a month, the Moon vanishes from our sky. The Sun’s light, which always illuminates one half of the Moon, shines only on the side we cannot see. When Sun, Moon, and Earth align perfectly, the Moon passes between us and the Sun, becoming invisible. The sky grows dark.
This disappearance isn’t an ending. It’s an invitation.

The Gift of Darkness
We live in a world that fears darkness; that floods every corner with artificial light; that equates visibility with value. But the New Moon asks us to reconsider. What if darkness isn’t emptiness but fullness? What if the absence of external light forces us to discover the light within?
The New Moon offers us a blank canvas, a fresh start, a chance to begin again. The word ‘new’ pulses at the heart of this phase. We’re being given an opportunity to regroup, to set intentions, to plant seeds in the fertile soil of possibility.
But first, we must be willing to sit in the dark.

Looking Inward When We Cannot See Out
When external light disappears, we’re temporarily rendered blind to the outside world. This isn’t punishment; it’s wisdom. In darkness, we’re forced to look inside, to feel our way forward, to trust our inner knowing rather than our outer seeing.
If we dare to look within during this phase, we may see our experiences more clearly. Our perceived successes and failures reveal their patterns. We begin to understand what works and what doesn’t.
Here’s where courage becomes essential. When something doesn’t work, do we behave like rats or humans? Rats, when blocked, immediately seek another path. Humans? We often keep repeating the same actions, circling endlessly, accepting failure as though it’s inevitable.
The New Moon offers us a different choice.

The Wisdom of Beginning Again
With even a little courage, the New Moon gives us the chance to do things differently. To start again, this time carrying a bit more wisdom. To believe in ourselves a little more deeply. To move forward with greater confidence.
If we dare to believe in our dreams, this is the moment to set intentions around them and begin moving towards manifestation.
This is the time for:
- Visualising what we truly want
- Imagining where we wish to go
- Planning how to get there
- Allowing dreams to rise to the surface
- Sitting in silence and hearing messages from our soul
- Planting seeds for the future
- Giving creativity room to play and explore
- Becoming more self-aware
- Taking conscious control of our lives
A Word of Caution
The New Moon amplifies everything, including resistance. If you’re holding back about something you think you want, you’ll feel that hesitation more strongly now. This isn’t a flaw in the system; it’s valuable information.
Begin with small ideas and wishes. Large, life-altering changes often need multiple New Moons, careful preparation, time to gestate in darkness before they’re ready to be born.
If you hear a murmur of doubt from within, listen. You may indeed be on the edge of something new, but perhaps it needs more time and clarity. Timing, after all, can be everything.
Practices for the New Moon
- Create a vision board that captures your intentions
- Write affirmations that support your dreams
- Spend time in meditation and contemplation
- Journal your desires without censoring them
- Light a candle in the darkness and watch it glow

Questions to Ask Yourself
- Which areas of my life need attention?
- What are my intentions for the next lunar cycle?
- Where do I want to focus my energy this month?
- What wants to be born through me?
The Monthly Gift
How fortunate we are to experience the New Moon every month, to practice beginning again, to rehearse making our dreams come true. Twelve and sometimes thirteen times a year, we’re given permission to start fresh, to plant new seeds, to trust in what we cannot yet see.
The sky is our limit. The darkness is our friend. The moon helps us to play, dream, and let new ideas dance in the fertile void.
Each new moon is our chance to renew ourselves.
